CBT with ERP
CBT explores how meanings, emotions and responses interact. ERP puts this understanding into practice by approaching agreed triggers while reducing compulsions and avoidance. This differs from repeatedly trying to prove that every feared outcome is impossible. Read the ERP guide.
Medication
A doctor or psychiatrist may discuss medicines such as selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs). The choice depends on your needs, medical history, potential benefits and side effects. Psychological therapy does not include prescribing, and you should not start, stop or change medication based on a website or without your prescriber’s advice.
An individual plan
Assessment includes intrusive thoughts, visible and mental rituals, reassurance, avoidance, previous treatment and other difficulties. The plan should identify practical goals and a way to review progress. For adolescents, developmental needs and appropriate parent or caregiver involvement also matter.
A person who is unable to manage daily activities or needs more intensive support may require a different level of care. Online appointments are not automatically the right format for every situation.
What progress can look like
- Spending less time on rituals or recovering more quickly after a trigger.
- Returning to activities that have become restricted.
- Making choices without repeated reassurance or checking.
- Using skills more independently and preparing for future setbacks.
Improvement varies between individuals. No responsible treatment plan can promise a cure or a guaranteed timetable.
